Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

You usually need to file a return if you are self-employed, a landlord with rental income, a company director taking dividends, or you have untaxed income such as freelance work. If you are unsure, email a short summary of your situation and we will tell you plainly whether a return is needed.

Can you take over my bookkeeping if my records are a mess?

Yes. Bringing disorganised records up to date is a normal part of the job. Send over what you have — bank statements, invoices, receipts, spreadsheets — and we will get everything organised and keep it that way going forward.

How does payroll work if I only have one or two employees?

Small payrolls are straightforward to run. We handle the payslips, Real Time Information submissions to HMRC, and workplace pension duties for each pay run, whether you pay weekly or monthly.

When do I need to register for VAT?

You must register once your taxable turnover passes the HMRC registration threshold in any rolling 12-month period, and you can register voluntarily before that if it benefits you. We can check your position, handle the registration and file your returns under Making Tax Digital.

What do limited company accounts involve?

A limited company must file annual accounts with Companies House and a corporation tax return with HMRC, alongside the director’s own Self Assessment where relevant. We prepare all of it and explain what you owe and when, well before the deadlines.

I’ve received a letter from HMRC. What should I do?

Don’t ignore it — most HMRC letters have a deadline. Email a copy or a photo of the letter along with any reference numbers, and we will explain what it means and what needs to happen next.

What is Making Tax Digital and does it affect me?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s move to digital record-keeping and software-based filing. VAT-registered businesses already file under MTD for VAT, and MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) is being phased in for sole traders and landlords. We set clients up on cloud accounting software such as Xero or QuickBooks, keep the records compliant and handle the submissions, so the switch is painless.

Do you work with Xero or QuickBooks?

Yes. We work with the leading cloud accounting platforms, including Xero and QuickBooks. Whether you need software chosen and set up from scratch, an untidy file brought back into shape, or ongoing bookkeeping inside the software you already use, we can help — and you keep access to your own numbers at any time.

Do I need to verify my identity with Companies House?

If you are a company director or a person with significant control (PSC), Companies House now requires you to verify your identity. AFS can guide you through the process, including identity checks via the Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) route, and make sure your company filings are not held up.

How do I get started?
